As the Coordinator,of Volunteers for Communities In Schools, my job is to pair Clark students with a volunteer mentor from the community who can provide them with encouragement, support and be another positive role model in their lives. Guidance is more than credits and transcripts, SAT applications, or college applications. It is an integral part of the total education program beginning at the elementary level. I believe that all children are unique and should be treated with respect and dignity; every student can succeed; and that learning is a lifelong process. It is my greatest desire to help students believe in these things for themselves. My door is always open to the students at Clark!

I have over 30 years of teaching experience in Mathematics and am nationally board certified in mathematics. I believe in individual attention for every student, every day. In class, students are expected to participate, work together, and offer help to each other as necessary. I also incorporate many applications of math into the classroom by using manipulatives, as well as having students create deigns through string art, origami, and line designs.

I try to nurture students into becoming independent learners and thinkers. I challenge them to question what is being taught to them through discussions and by working with peer groups. As an educator, I provide students with an array of options on how to learn. I point them in the general direction, but let them explore their own paths.

I believe that Clark provides students with an excellent opportunity to succeed in the classroom and receive more one-on-one attention than the student would have received at their home-school. Education is a tool that we can all use to improve our lives, as a teacher it is my goal to illustrate this to students. Every day is an opportunity for students to do well, gain confidence, and learn about themselves. I love being a part of each student's journey through high school.

Clark students need personalized, flexible instruction that carefully strengthens their weaknesses and builds upon their interests and strengths. Solid academic and life skills need to be fostered and experience expanded through community involvement. Listening is the first step in helping students reach potential, then devising a structure that supports their needs. Students have a better chance of succeeding when they have a clear vision of what they want and how they intend to get there. Flexibility allows students to pursue multiple options in achieving their goals. Clark students need to be equipped with strong basics and essential skills that allow them to compete in modern job markets today.

Teaching students at Clark Academy has been a wonderful opportunity to grow as a teacher. With small classes and a family atmosphere, I have been able to help students understand how they learn. Being a part of the active learning environment enables students to learn practical applications in academics and life skills. Clark is not just academics, but relationships built on trust and respect.

Visual Art is a very hands-on subject and I tend to be very hands-on, also. The majority of my classes are at the introductory level; therefore, I teach in many small doses. It is my belief that individualized instruction works best for most learners. I will present to the class and then work individually with each student to make sure that he/she understands what to do and how to do it. I can usually be found sitting at an art table working with the students.

My daily goal is to make my classroom a place to enjoy learning. Science cannot be separated from the world around us. I enjoy being with high school students and have over the last 35+ years. Each student has a fresh chance for a fresh start in my class every single day. My lessons are varied so that students with different learning styles have at least one lesson a week that fits. My standards are high and I expect a great deal from my classes, but I am fair and give many opportunities to pull grades up.

It is my job as a teacher, to help my students develop the self-esteem and confidence in mathematics. Therefore, my teaching varies to meet the needs of learners. My students work towards to becoming critical thinkers and problem solvers. Through questioning, answering, and springboard projects, students will begin to think and develop critical thinking skills. I try to reach this diverse community of learners through lectures, cooperative groups, problem solving activities, technology, and challenging questions are a sampling of techniques I use. Using different methods of teaching and differentiation, students will be able to grasp the material covered. Technology emphasis is extremely important in the technological age in which we live. Utilizing technology in my teaching, I will equip students to be better prepared for their endeavors outside of the classroom where they will face a multitude of different situations in life and work. Using graphing calculators, powerpoints, the smartboard and real life applications, students can have a better understanding of how math is applicable and useful in the real-world.

I have been teaching at Clark for 2 years now. My classes include Credit Recovery and Personal Finance. One of the most important methods I use in my classes is differentiated instruction. With this method I am able to give each student that one on one focus-centered attention that they need to be able to learn, produce quality work, and pass each test. This method is the center of Credit Recovery and the kids love the fact that they are able to understand at a greater level with less interruptions. Teaching at Clark has been a great experience and I love being able to teach students that may have been once labeled "Unteachable".
